6 Diesel Problems You’ll Want to Know About

by | Jan 19, 2023

Known for their fuel efficiency and power, diesel engines are a popular choice for many people today. However, that doesn’t mean that diesel problems are nonexistent. In fact, just like any other automobile, diesel-powered vehicles face normal wear and tear. They also need repair or maintenance now and then.

6 Common Diesel Problems You May Encounter

Whether you’re a new diesel driver or diesels have long been your vehicle of choice, here are some of the top diesel problems you may come across while you own or operate a diesel engine:

1.  Oil oxidation – Oil used in diesel engines must be kept free of debris but also free of air. When it is exposed to oxygen, oxidation occurs and the oil’s lubricating ability is reduced. This can lead to engine damage and/or failure.

2.  Overheating engine – Diesel vehicles are known for power but when pushed too hard, the engine can overheat. Overheating can also result from problems with the cooling system such as a coolant leak or faulty thermostat.

3.  Black smoke – While it’s not uncommon to see diesel exhaust, black smoke being emitted by the exhaust system IS a problem. It’s often the result of an improper air/fuel mixture and should be addressed as soon as possible.

4.  Oil leaks – If you find that your diesel engine requires more frequent oil changes or you visibly notice a leak, schedule service with your Tempe diesel mechanic right away. Leaking oil can be an environmental hazard but also lead to engine damage and/or failure.

5.  Using gasoline vs. diesel fuel – This is one of the simplest diesel problems to avoid. Pay close attention to which fuel you’re pumping when at the gas station. ONLY use diesel fuel in your diesel-powered vehicle. Filling up with gas instead can damage engine parts and may even lead to needing a full engine replacement.

6.  Poor power – If power is reduced when starting up or accelerating, your diesel engine may have a dirty oil filter, blocked fuel lines, failing fuel injectors, or another issue.

Tempe Diesel Repair and Maintenance

If you notice any of the common diesel problems listed above, or you encounter another issue that we didn’t mention, it’s important to get your vehicle serviced sooner than later. That’s because many of these problems can lead to more complex and more expensive problems if not addressed properly and in a timely manner.

It’s also important to note that many of these diesel problems can be avoided altogether simply by following a regular preventative maintenance schedule. Just like gas-powered vehicles have maintenance items that are recommended at certain mileage or time intervals, diesel engines must be regularly maintained as well.
