Road Trip Safety Reminders For the Holidays!

by | Dec 18, 2023

Holiday travel typically leads to increased crashes. It is our hope that by sharing some important road trip safety tips, no matter how simple or obvious, we can help drivers to stay safe as they hit the roads now and in 2024. We may be an auto repair shop, and we may work on vehicles, but keeping people behind the wheel to make more memories with those they love and experience new places and activities will always be our mission. We want to maintain your vehicle so you can avoid accidents or major auto repairs that will put a damper on any road trip. As you hit the road, keep these important tips in mind!

Road Trip Safety Tips When Traveling

  • Make road trip safety your top priority. Don’t take chances, stay alert, drive well-rested, hydrate and make sure your vehicle is ready to go.
  • Plan your route in advance. This includes the hotels or motels you may stay in on the way. Reservations reduce stress and help you avoid driving around at night in unfamiliar areas when you’re tired.
  • Tell someone else about your travel plans. Let them know when and where you’re going and a good number where they can reach you. Bring along some emergency numbers, too.
  • Pay attention to road and weather conditions. Visit Arizona Traveler Information, download the AZ 511 app or dial 511 for updated road and weather conditions. This also goes for the area you’ll be traveling if outside of Arizona.
  • Make sure your vehicle is prepared. Preventative maintenance and routine services will get you the full vehicle inspection you need. We’ll check belts and hoses, fluids, wipers, lights, your car battery, brakes, tires, oil and more.
  • Make sure YOU are prepared for travel. Get a good night’s rest the night before. Wear your seatbelt and insist that your passengers do, too. Make sure car seats or booster seats are installed properly and everything is safe.
  • Practice healthy driving habits. Stay patient and take your time. Avoid speeding or aggressive driving. NEVER drink and drive or drive impaired by any substances. Buzzed driving IS drunk driving.
  • Pack drinks and snacks so you can stay hydrated and well-fed.
  • Don’t drive tired. Take breaks and stretch your legs as needed.
  • Stay safe on the road. When pulling over, stop in a safe spot away from traffic.
  • Plan ahead. Expect the unexpected. Plan for getting lost, lots of traffic, accidents or inclement weather. Allow for extra time and don’t stress.

Tips for Packing For Your Road Trip

For Arizona road trips, pack the water, no matter what time of year. Also bring:

  • A fully charged cell phone and charger(s)
  • Emergency travel items like flares, cables, etc.
  • A fully-stocked first aid kit with pain relievers, bandages, gauze, alcohol wipes, disinfectant, prescribed medications, etc.
  • Snacks and extra water
  • A copy of a road map
  • Any extra supplies and fluids for your vehicle
